Turkey's Aktif Bank Becomes First to Join China's Yuan Payment System

Aktif Bank, the inaugural Turkish institution to join China's Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, aims to benefit Turkish enterprises by streamlining yuan-based international transactions.

Aktif Bank has officially become the first Turkish bank to join China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), a significant milestone announced at the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) held in Xiamen. This historic move signals a new era of financial cooperation between Türkiye and China, enhancing the efficiency of economic exchanges.

The CIPS system simplifies global payments and settlements in Chinese yuan by cutting out the time and cost differences inherent in traditional multi-currency conversions. This advancement is set to provide considerable benefits to Turkish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), alongside larger corporations, by streamlining their international payment processes.

Aysegul Adaca Ogan, General Manager of Aktif Bank, highlighted the substantial growth of CIPS during the event. She noted that the platform, developed by the People’s Bank of China, has extended its network to include over 1,800 banks globally.

Implications for Trade and Cooperation

Ogan provided insightful remarks on the growing relevance of yuan-denominated transactions. She reported that these payments have surged to account for 28% of China's foreign trade volume, which amounts to a formidable $6 trillion over the past five years. Moreover, bilateral trade between Türkiye and China has doubled, from $25 billion to $50 billion in this timeframe, underscoring the burgeoning economic ties between the two nations.

The decision to join CIPS came amid rising yuan payments in Chinese foreign trade and an increasing demand for efficient yuan payment systems in Türkiye. 'Joining this platform has become a viable opportunity for us,' Ogan stated, as Aktif Bank aims to open its digital banking platform for SMEs to facilitate seamless engagements through CIPS.

Ogan also indicated the bank's ambition to expand its international financial corridor beyond Europe and the Americas to now include China. 'We’re the only Turkish bank at the fair’s pavilion and our presence here today is an important step in our long-term strategy,' she added.

Strategic Positioning and Future Growth

Aktif Bank’s entry into the CIPS network is a strategic maneuver to position itself more robustly in the global financial landscape. By enabling efficient, yuan-focused banking solutions, the bank seeks to enhance its service offerings to Turkish enterprises engaged in international trade.

In a broader context, the incorporation of Turkish entities into China's yuan payment ecosystem represents a strengthening of economic ties and symbolizes a pivot away from traditional Western-centric trade paradigms. The strategic insights shared by Ogan suggest Aktif Bank is ready to capitalize on emerging opportunities in cross-border finance.

This development comes amid an evolving global economic climate where digital banking solutions are increasingly essential. By joining CIPS, Aktif Bank ensures that both SMEs and larger corporations have access to an efficient platform for international transactions, reflecting shifts in economic strategy and collaboration.

How Cities Can Benefit from Global Payment Integration

The integration of Turkish banks into global financial systems like CIPS can have significant implications for urban economies. Cities with vibrant SME sectors stand to gain from reduced transaction costs and faster settlement times, enhancing their competitiveness in the global market.

With the increase in trade facilitated by platforms like CIPS, cities may witness economic growth, requiring efficient governance to manage this influx. Municipalities could leverage these benefits through smart infrastructure investments, public-private partnerships, and support for local businesses aiming for international expansion.

Additionally, this integration lays the groundwork for enhanced cultural and economic ties between urban centers in Türkiye and China, fostering an exchange of ideas, talent, and technology. As cities strategize to strengthen their positions in the global market, adaptive policy making will be crucial to maximizing these benefits.
