Türkiye’s exports reached an unprecedented $25.62 billion in July, marking a 2.9% year-on-year increase despite global and regional uncertainties, according to data from Trade Minister Omer Bolat.
Türkiye’s exports surged to a record high for the month of July, with a total value of $25.62 billion, representing a 2.9% increase compared to the previous year, as per the official data issued on Friday. This figure also marks the country’s second-highest monthly export value in its history.
Trade Minister Omer Bolat highlighted the significance of this growth in a written statement, noting the resilience of Türkiye’s export sector amid challenging global conditions. The data, gathered by the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Trade Ministry, illustrates a positive trend in Türkiye's export capabilities.
Meanwhile, imports saw a 5.1% increase from a year earlier, reaching $32.97 billion, which led to a widening of the foreign trade deficit by 13.6% to $7.34 billion. The export-to-import coverage ratio also witnessed a drop, declining from 79.4% in July 2025 to 77.7% this July.
Key Factors Influencing Trade Dynamics
Despite ongoing regional conflicts and unfavorable global scenarios, Türkiye has managed to sustain growth in its export sector. In the first seven months of the year, exports grew by 3.4% year-on-year, reaching $161.54 billion, noted Minister Bolat.
Imports during the same period rose by 4.7% to $222.09 billion, pushing the trade deficit to $60.55 billion, an increase of 8.3%. Annualized figures showed a 3.4% rise in exports to $278.5 billion, while imports grew by 4.9% to $375.3 billion.
Minister Bolat emphasized that Türkiye’s export resilience is crucial amidst the geopolitical tensions and rising protectionism worldwide. The Turkish government plans to further enhance export potential through strategic financing, export support, and leveraging its overseas networks.
Market Focus and Strategic Initiatives
Germany emerged as Türkiye’s largest export destination in July, with exports totaling $2.04 billion. Other significant markets included the United States at $1.68 billion, the United Kingdom at $1.35 billion, Iraq, and Italy both at $1.11 billion.
On the import side, China was Türkiye’s largest source, with imports amounting to $5.04 billion, followed by Russia at $3.23 billion, and Germany at $2.52 billion. This diverse set of trading partners highlights Türkiye's strategic positioning in global trade.
Bolat reiterated that the Turkish administration continues to aim for Türkiye to ascend the ranks in global export standings through President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vision. This strategy focuses on high-value-added and competitive exports while safeguarding local manufacturers against unfair foreign competition.
Türkiye's Robust Trade Strategy: Implications for Cities
The record-breaking performance in Türkiye’s export sector demonstrates a robust strategy that cities across the country can learn from, particularly as they navigate global economic uncertainties. Urban centers contribute significantly to the nation's export portfolio, emphasizing the necessity of supportive municipal policies.
This growth presents an opportunity for Türkiye's major cities to gain economic leverage and increase employment opportunities by prioritizing industries with high export potential. Civic leaders can play a pivotal role in fostering an ecosystem that supports innovation and international trade.
Moreover, as Türkiye pursues an aggressive export strategy, city administrations may find it beneficial to align local economic development plans with national goals. This alignment can enhance infrastructure, facilitate efficient logistics, and promote competitiveness at the municipal level, which is crucial for sustaining long-term growth and resilience.
