In Ankara, officials and developers gathered to accelerate clean industrial transformations in steel, cement, fertilizer, and aluminum sectors, setting the stage for pivotal investments before the UN COP31 summit.

Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, became the focal point for the nation's clean industrial push as it hosted the Build Clean Now Türkiye Workshop on Monday. This event aims to quicken the country's path toward a cleaner industrial sector.

Officials, alongside financial leaders and industrial developers, gathered in a program set up by the Industrial Transformation Accelerator and the Boston Consulting Group, in cooperation with Türkiye's Industry and Technology Ministry. The discussions primarily zeroed in on pivotal sectors such as steel, cement, fertilizer, and aluminum.

Focus on Investment Decisions and Decarbonization

The workshop's primary goal is to push forward final investment decisions for clean industry projects. Findings from these discussions are set to be compiled into a comprehensive report to be released before the UN COP31 climate summit in November.

Turkish Deputy Industry and Technology Minister Muhammet Kasim Gonullu described the program as crucial to Türkiye's broader green transformation initiatives. 'Decarbonization is vital for preserving competitiveness, creating new investment opportunities, and enhancing Türkiye's role in global value chains,' he emphasized.

Global and Regional Insights Presented

Faustine Delasalle, who leads the Mission Possible Partnership and directs the Industrial Transformation Accelerator, stated the workshop aims to establish market conditions favorable for bankable deep decarbonization projects. She noted that there is a global upswing, with 19 investment decisions for large-scale clean industry projects approved in the past six months, indicating a doubling from last year.

Delasalle further explained that Türkiye's position within the 'new industrial sunbelt,' coupled with its robust commercial relationships with Europe, positions it as a key player in scaling up deep decarbonization initiatives.

Pathways for Urban Impact and Policy

Türkiye's active role in this clean industry transformation underscores the significant impact policy and strategic investments can have on urban sustainability. By focusing on industrial sectors that are both major economic drivers and large pollutant sources, these efforts aim to align industrial growth with environmental sustainability.

For cities, especially those heavily reliant on industrial outputs, this transition presents a blueprint for balancing economic growth with climate goals. Municipal leaders could leverage such frameworks to stimulate local economies while pursuing green policies. The collaboration between government and industry leaders sets an example of how cities can initiate similar change, driving both innovation and sustainability at a local level.
