Russian Grain Exports to China Surge Nearly 50% in 2026

Victor Chen | AA

Russian grain exports to China have seen a dramatic increase, with a 47% rise in value and a 31% jump in volume during the first seven months of 2026.

New figures from the Russian Agriculture Ministry reveal a nearly 50% increase in the value of grain exports from Russia to China over the first seven months of 2026. According to Ilyushin, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s Agroexport center, these exports amounted to 895,000 tons of grain valued at $227 million.

At the International Forum Rostki in Kazan, Ilyushin noted that this increase signifies a 31% rise in physical terms and a 47% rise in value terms compared to the same period in the previous year. These figures reflect the growing importance of agricultural products in bilateral trade between Moscow and Beijing.

The trade expansion is part of a broader economic cooperation between the two nations, which have been enhancing collaboration across various sectors.

Significant Contributions from Barley and Wheat

Barley has emerged as Russia's leading grain export to China, contributing more than $87 million to the total export value, followed by corn at more than $55 million, and buckwheat at about $45 million, according to Ilyushin.

Interestingly, wheat exports saw a dramatic increase, surging 24-fold in value year-on-year to more than $10 million. This growth highlights the increased demand for Russian wheat in China.

Additionally, oat exports jumped 41% in value to almost $30 million, while corn shipments rose by 13% to over $55 million.

Context of Trade Expansion

The surge in grain exports for the January-July period of 2026 ranks as the second-highest on record, trailing only the 2024 record when Russia exported over 1 million tons of grain valued at $248 million to China.

This growth is indicative of the greater agricultural trade between Russia and China, which continues to evolve as both countries capitalize on mutual economic opportunities.

Moscow and Beijing's strategic partnership is not only helping boost agricultural exchanges but is also expected to enhance economic resilience in both nations amidst fluctuating global trade dynamics.

Economic Implications for Global Grain Markets

The impressive growth in Russian grain exports to China could have significant implications for global grain markets. The increased volume and value reflect Russia's growing influence as a major grain supplier to one of the world's largest economies.

For municipal governance and urban policymakers, the shifting dynamics in grain trade warrant attention. As China strengthens its supply chain with Russia, cities reliant on Chinese grain imports may need to reassess their procurement strategies.

Furthermore, the focus on agriculture in this bilateral relationship hints at potential areas for urban policy development, including food security and trade infrastructure enhancements to facilitate robust and resilient supply chains.
