Norway's Mobile Network Outage Shuts Down Trains, Interrupts Emergency Communications
Kwame Boateng | AA
A major outage in Norway's mobile network disrupted train services and emergency communication lines, impacting emergency responsiveness and travelers' schedules across the country.
On Thursday, Norway experienced a considerable disruption in its telecommunications network, significantly affecting transport and emergency service communication. The outage at mobile provider Telenor halted rail services nationwide, leaving train passengers stranded and services on high alert.
Public broadcaster NRK reported the impact on train traffic, as rail infrastructure operator Bane Nor halted all train operations. This decision was made to ensure safety, with communications adviser Olav Nordli emphasizing the inability to contact emergency services as a primary concern.
Train operator Vy warned passengers about the delays and cancellations. According to Vy communications director Elin Myrmel-Johansen, some passengers had the option to disembark or wait for service resumption, with buses arranged from Oslo to major cities as an alternative.
Telenor's Network Services Disrupted
The fault in Telenor's mobile network started at 3.15 pm local time and affected customer calls, including those to emergency numbers. Although SMS and mobile network services began returning to normal by 6 pm, voice traffic issues persisted.
Telenor assured that there were no signs of hacking or an attack. Communications manager Vetle Andersen confirmed to Norwegian news outlet Aftenposten that the company was working to resolve the issue.
The Norwegian Communications Authority indicated ongoing difficulties for Telenor customers reaching emergency services, stressing persistent voice call disruptions despite some service restoration.
Emergency Services Impacted
The outage had significant consequences for emergency communications, affecting the ability to reach critical numbers. Police in Oslo and other districts suggested that difficulties might be experienced when calling emergency and non-emergency numbers.
Health services were also impacted, with the Norwegian Directorate of Health advising the public to try emergency calls again if initially unsuccessful. The Directorate emphasized using phones connected to alternative networks if needed.
Despite these challenges, the emergency communications network utilized by responders remained unaffected, according to the Directorate for Civil Protection. This operational network facilitated essential emergency response capabilities despite broader mobile network failures.
What Municipalities Can Learn From Communications Outages
This telecommunications outage underscores the critical need for robust infrastructure that municipalities must prioritize for effective crisis management and public safety. Cities rely heavily on seamless communication for transportation networks and emergency services, and disruptions can lead to significant vulnerabilities.
Urban areas must emphasize the development and maintenance of alternative communication pathways, especially for emergency responses, to avoid being severely impacted by a single point of failure. Investing in technology that ensures redundancy and reliability in public service networks is essential for safeguarding community resilience and operational continuity.
