Gaza Hospitals at Risk as Fuel Shortages Threaten Critical Generators

Gaza's Health Ministry issued an urgent warning as hospital generators face imminent shutdown due to depleted oil supplies, threatening essential medical services amid Israel's ongoing blockade.

Yesterday, Gaza’s Health Ministry warned that hospital generators could soon cease to function, following the exhaustion of operating oil stocks. This situation arises as the ongoing Israeli blockade continues to severely restrict entry of vital supplies into the enclave.

The ministry highlighted that engineering teams are making considerable efforts to maintain the electricity supply for essential hospital services, despite extremely challenging conditions. According to their statement, 'Generators have been running for thousands of continuous hours without sufficient oil or maintenance, bringing them to the final point of mechanical danger.'

Urgent Need for Supplies and Intervention

The ministry has reiterated its urgent call for international intervention. The issue transcends just acquiring operating oil,it is becoming critical to also safeguard remaining functioning generators from permanent damage. In a dire warning, the ministry stated, 'If generator engines burn out because of the lack of oil, they could become permanently unusable even if supplies become available later.'

A severe shortage of over 2,500 liters of oil monthly is required to keep the generators operational and prevent medical departments from shutting down. This shortage is exacerbated by Israeli restrictions on both operating and maintenance supplies.

Impact of Long-Term Blockade on Medical Services

Gaza’s hospitals have become increasingly dependent on generators, particularly following Israel’s cessation of electricity supply in October 2023. The reliance on limited resources has been consistent since Gaza’s only power plant shut down on October 11, 2023, due to fuel shortages.

The ministry earlier reported that 70% of hospital generators had already failed by September, owing to the blockade-induced scarcity of fuel, oil, and necessary parts.

Despite a ceasefire coming into effect since October 10, 2025, the region still faces supply constraints that hinder the rehabilitation of its health infrastructure. The ongoing crisis threatens the operation of critical facilities such as operating rooms, intensive care units, and emergency medical departments.

Gaza's Electricity Crisis: Challenges and Prospects

Municipal leaders are poised to face significant challenges as Gaza navigates this entrenched energy crisis. The reliance on costly and maintenance-heavy generators underscores the desperate need for sustainable energy solutions and external support. Addressing this immediate crisis could provide a benchmark for international cooperative efforts that prioritize human welfare.

In the longer term, municipal policy makers must collaborate with global partners to secure a consistent flow of crucial materials and explore renewable energy options. This could help mitigate the impacts of future blockades and create resilient public service frameworks that offer steady health solutions for all inhabitants.
